The American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973, but before that gay men and lesbians were almost always characterized by sickness and immorality, vilified with public misconceptions of paedophilia, and trapped in a discourse centred on the search for a cure.
